A Northern Virginia Spa is offering a pedicure using fish that eat off dead skin from your feet. Customers immerse their feed in a tub of water with the “Doctor Fish” or garra rufa. The fish immediately start eating dead skin off the toes and feet. Customers say the procedure is ‘ticklish” and it works! Even some squeamish customers are reporting satisfaction at how smooth their feet feel after getting this treatment. The treatments originated in Turkey for patients with Psoriasis with some patients reporting complete cure. The fish are a protected species in Turkey due to fear of over harvesting. John Ho who runs the North Virginia spa called “Yvonne Hair and Nails Salon” with his wife Yvonne brought this to the US and is probably the only salon to offer this treatment. He claims that over 5000 people have experienced the fish pedicure at a cost of about $35 for a 15 minute treatment. Many experts expressed concerned about the hygiene of this treatment which Ho dismisses by ensuring his customers that fresh water is used for every customer and that the fish are changed between treatments. He maintains about a 1000 fish in his aquarium and uses 100 for each customer. The surgery to correct leg & foot deformities in children is a lengthy, & sometimes, difficult procedure. Metal frames are attached to the leg and / or foot and over a period of time the frame is manipulated to obtain the corrected position. During this period the muscles & skin become very tight which causes pain & may pull the joint out of position. When this happens it is sometimes necessary to stop the treatment before the best position is obtained. This means that not only is the child left with an inadequate result but that further surgery is required in the future. If the tension could be removed whilst the treatment is underway this would reduce the pain, the possibility of joint damage & potentially allow a more satisfactory to be obtained without the need for further surgery. Botulinum toxin or Botox, as it is commonly called, has the potential to temporarily reduce the tension in the muscles without causing permanent damage. Botox or Botulinum toxin is also a safe and effective method to prevent excessive sweating of the armpits and hands in addition to being a wrinkle remover. Botox has been used to treat many different ailments including migraines and chronic headaches. Unfortunately for migraine sufferers, recent research shows that though it is effective for a wide range of ailments and conditions associated with excessive muscle contraction, it may not help with migrains and chronic tension headaches.
